BNP National Unity to demo from single platform

first_imgMain opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and two new coalitions have decided to launch a movement with a five-point demand that includes release of former prime minister BNP chief Khaleda Zia.The BNP, National Unity Process initiated by reputed jurist Kamal Hossain and Jukto (United) Front led by former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury took the decision at a meeting at BNP leader Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain’s city residence on Sunday evening. The opposition now commonly demands dissolution of parliament before announcement of election schedule, resignation of the prime minister and her cabinet, holding of election under a neutral government, deployment of the army personnel with magistracy power, and no use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the general elections.”We have a common goal — to stand against the present autocratic regime, from a single platform. We’ve decided in principle to launch together a movement from now on,” said ASM Abdur Rab, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), a component of the Front.About the demand for release of Khaleda Zia, he said it is one of their demands as is the release of those who were detailed and sued during the quota reform movement and the demonstration for safe roads.Asked about the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh’s alliance with the BNP, Rab said the new opposition coalition would not take into considerations the BNP’s alliance with any other party.Expressing optimism about joint movement, senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed said through population demonstration, Khaleda Zia would be released and the election commission would be reconstituted for holding free and fair elections in Bangladesh.Sunday’s development in solidifying the coalition followed the public rally convened by Kamal Hossain and joined by senior BNP leaders including party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and some other minor parties and groups.last_img read more
