first_imgcruisePonantPonant Explorer April 2018 marks 30 years of PONANT, the only cruise line sailing under the French flag, and a year of celebrations is planned including a documentary film and book charting the luxury cruise line’s history, a collection of limited edition 30th anniversary clothing and accessories, and the launch of PONANT’s first two expedition ships in the new PONANT EXPLORERS series – Le Lapérouse and Le Champlain.In April 1988 the French cruise company “Compagnie des Iles du Ponant’, now known simply as PONANT, was formed by a group of 14 enthusiastic French merchant seaman. In 1991 Le Ponant, the fleet’s first sailing ship, emerged. By 2007, four sister ships were under construction – Le Boréal, L’Austral, Le Soléal and Le Lyrial. In 2017, the cruise line had five ships, 900 crew members and 300 departures.Antarctique © Studio PONANT/Lorraine TurciBy 2021 PONANT will have a fleet of 12 ships sailing the globe – 460 departures spanning the Antarctic to the Arctic including Alaska, the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, the Scattered Islands, the Kimberley, Papua New Guinea and the geographic North Pole.
