Local Films for Festival in Trinidad Sept. 18-25

first_img Four local films will premiere at the upcoming Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF), slated for September 18 to 25 in Port-of-Spain. The projects are ‘Agwe’ by Ina Sortiva; ‘Flight’, Kia Williams; ‘Lovers in the City’, Mezan Morrison and ‘Safe Harbour’, Kaiel Eytle. Story Highlights Four local films will premiere at the upcoming Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF), slated for September 18 to 25 in Port-of-Spain.The projects are ‘Agwe’ by Ina Sortiva; ‘Flight’, Kia Williams; ‘Lovers in the City’, Mezan Morrison and ‘Safe Harbour’, Kaiel Eytle. While at the festival, the film-makers will be marketing their films for distribution and widening their networks on the international film circuit, with the aim of expanding the reach of Jamaican content globally. The opportunity came from the Propella Initiative, a thrust by Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and Jamaica Film and Television Association (JAFTA), to support the talent of Jamaican film-makers and garner international exposure for the culture through film.Speaking with JIS News, Film Commissioner at JAMPRO, Renée Robinson, explained that Propella is a script-to-screen programme that nurtures Jamaican content creators and enables them to tell their stories cinematically by providing funding and technical support.Ms. Robinson noted that the four new Jamaican short films were selected through a blind process and were produced over the summer period with financial support of $500,000 each, from the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund.“We did not know who we were selecting…It was based on the merit of the project, and after that process was completed, we had a series of interviews to ensure that the finalists were at the production stage where they could deliver the project, and that is how we came up with the top four,” the Film Commissioner said. The film-makers underwent capacity-building boot camps on script development, directing, producing, pitching, festival strategy and distribution. The Film Commissioner noted that the programme has produced excellent content, and opens the door for film-makers in international markets, which is a crucial element of JAMPRO’s film development strategy.“The programme itself has seen many significant wins. We now have a catalogue of short films ready to represent the potential of talent in the sector. Over the years, several of the shorts have secured financial interest in further development into features or TV episodics; and key on-screen talent have been discovered internationally through this platform,” she highlighted. She added that the festival is an excellent platform for regional film-makers to meet each other to create collaboration opportunities and also a starting point for many of these projects to identify partners, executive producers or future distributors.Ms. Robinson noted that JAMPRO will also lead a delegation to the Toronto International Film Festival in September. In January, she noted that a delegation, including Jamaican actress, Shantol Jackson and other participants in the Idris Elba film, Yardie, attended the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, USA.In June, local director, Storm Saulter and his team attended the American Black Film Festival and won three of the top awards. The Jamaica Film Commission, housed at JAMPRO, is mandated to promote the Jamaican film industry through facilitation of activities that increase investment, export and employment in the sector. While at the festival, the film-makers will be marketing their films for distribution and widening their networks on the international film circuit, with the aim of expanding the reach of Jamaican content globally.last_img read more

Plunging Calgary office values linked to high oil and gas unemployment rate

first_imgThe Canadian Press CALGARY — A commercial realtor says a 32 per cent decline in Calgary’s downtown office building property assessment this year will likely translate into lower costs for some tenants, but he doesn’t expect much improvement in the vacancy rate.Greg Kwong, Alberta managing director for realtor CBRE, says companies will have to start replacing the thousands of energy industry workers laid off following the oil price crash of late 2014 before the city’s downtown vacancy rate will recover from its year-end level of 26.4 per cent.Calgary Chamber of Commerce spokesman Mark Cooper says lower values in the downtown means property taxes are likely going to have to rise for businesses throughout the city to make up the difference. He says investor confidence needed for job creation in Calgary is low thanks to Alberta oil prices which failed to keep up with last year’s global oil price rally due to discounts blamed on a lack of export pipeline capacity. The city says the total assessed value of downtown office properties fell by $5 billion over the past year and now makes up only 18 per cent of the total non-residential base, down from about 32 per cent in 2015.It says the crescent-shaped Bow Tower, home to oil companies Cenovus Energy Inc. and Encana Corp., lost 18.6 per cent of its value in 2018, falling to about $779 million. In 2015, it was valued at $1.43 billion.Residential property assessments in Calgary are down one per cent compared with the previous year and retail assessments were little changed.last_img read more

Program expansion provides respite funding for special needs children

first_imgSURREY, B.C. – With the expansion of a program, more than 1,300 additional families with children who have special needs will benefit from respite services by qualified caregivers. As of March 31, 2018, approximately 3,900 families were receiving respite services. This program expansion will provide for 1,300 additional families and provide an increase in the base funding amount each family can receive.“We’ve heard how incredibly important respite care is for families,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “Parents can get so caught up caring for a loved one that they forget to take time for themselves. They often don’t have the luxury of asking a friend, neighbour or relative to step in for them. Respite offers them a chance to recharge and the peace of mind that comes from having a skilled professional they can count on with the training to meet their child’s unique care needs.” Respite funding allows eligible families to purchase services from a qualified person who will care for the child while the parents attend to other family priorities. Services are provided in the child’s home, the respite caregiver’s home or within the community. Eligibility is not based on a specific diagnosis. Children may be eligible for the program if they are assessed as dependent in at least three of four areas of daily living (washing, bathroom assistance, eating and dressing), or have a palliative condition.According to the government, once families become eligible for respite funding, they are also able to access a range of other programs, including access to a child and youth care worker, behaviour supports, parenting skills training, counselling, housekeeping and life-skills programs for children.Government is developing a new plan to better support children and youth with special needs and their families. It will guide how the ministry invests in and delivers services for children and youth with special needs, and will roll out in spring 2020.The $6.3-million boost to the Province’s respite program was announced in Budget 2019, and changes began to come into effect April 1, 2019. Five million dollars is being used to provide respite services for families who had previously been on the waiting list. The remaining $1.3 million is increasing the base annual funding amount each family can receive from $2,800 to $3,080, marking the first increase in respite funding since 1989.For more information on services available; CLICK HERElast_img read more

The Latest Trump Says He Wants To Protect The Nation

first_imgThe move is already drawing bipartisan criticism on Capitol Hill and is expected to face rounds of legal challenges. Trump told stories, without providing evidence, of horrific abuse of women being smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border. He also said the border wall would be needed to battle drug cartels as part of a “virtual invasion” from Mexico. 11:10 a.m.President Donald Trump says many other presidents have declared national emergencies. But the presidents he has cited did not use emergency powers to pay for projects that Congress wouldn’t support. The president declared a national emergency and would find other funds for the wall after expressing unhappiness about a congressional border security deal. A list compiled by the Brennan Center says Clinton declared 17 national emergencies, Bush 13 and Obama 12. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted a photo of Trump signing the declaration Friday in the moments before his scattershot Rose Garden news conference.center_img Emergency declarations by former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were overwhelmingly for the purpose of addressing crises that emerged abroad. Many blocked foreign interests or terrorist-linked entities from access to funds. Some prohibited certain imports from or investments to countries associated with human rights abuses. Trump said Friday he will use executive powers to bypass Congress, which approved far less money for border barriers than he had sought. Trump plans to siphon billions of dollars from federal military construction and counterdrug efforts for his long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall. Waterpropelled jetpack hits the market for 99500 w video

first_img More information: jetlev-flyer.com and jetlev.comvia: Gizmag (PhysOrg.com) — A water-propelled jetpack called Jetlev R200 is possibly the most fun-looking water activity yet. The Florida-based company Jetlev Technologies, Inc., working with German company MS Watersports GmbH, has recently started limited production in a phased roll-out program. At a cost of $99,500 per jetpack, the target market for the recreational device is holiday resorts. © 2010 PhysOrg.com The Jetlev R200 can reach heights of 28 feet and speeds of 22 mph. As the pilot steers the device, the boat follows along in the water. The boat delivers water to the jetpack through the hose, and thrust is generated by forcing the water downward through the nozzles located on each side of the jetpack.Jetlev Technologies says that this design greatly improves the thrust-to-weight ratio compared to other jetpacks, allowing the Jetlev to propel a 150-lb (68-kg) pilot to speeds of up to 22 mph (35 km/h) at heights of up to 28 ft (8.5 m). The Jetlev can accommodate pilots who are 4.9-6.5 ft (1.5-2 m) tall and weigh 88-330 lb (40-150 kg). With a 26-gallon (100-liter) tank, the Jetlev can operate for about one hour at full throttle or up to three hours at cruising speeds. The company also says that most people can learn how to fly the Jetlev after a few minutes of in-water instruction. Thrust is controlled through grip twist, while lifting the control arms up and down can move the pilot forward or backward by changing the angle of the nozzles. Differential nozzle angles allow the jetpack to be turned left and right. The Jetlev also has several safety features, including a 5-point quick-release harness, protective backrest, head support, and inherent flotation. The ride is not uncomfortable, since the pilot’s weight is supported by the padded unicycle-style saddle and leg trapeze.
