Beautification and Streetscaping Projects Announced

first_imgGovernment is partnering with municipalities to invest in beautification projects across the province. Through the $500,000 Beautification and Streetscaping Program, the province will contribute up to 50 per cent of the costs of municipal projects with a minimum contribution of $10,000 and a maximum of $25,000. The program is application based and work can include landscaping, installing interpretive and entrance signs, enhancing lighting and building public restrooms. Among the recipients is the Sydney Waterfront District Beautification Project which was announced today, July 20, by Energy and Mines Minister Derek Mombourquette, on behalf of Chuck Porter, Minister of Municipal Affairs. Under this project, the province will contribute $25,000 toward landscaping work on Charlotte Street and the installation of signage. “The Beautification and Streetscaping Program is designed to support the development of inviting areas where residents and visitors want to spend time,” said Mr. Mombourquette. “Key investments can rejuvenate areas, foster local pride, encourage economic development and enhance the character of municipalities.” “We are passionate about the experience that locals and visitors have in the Sydney waterfront district,” said Michelle Wilson, executive director of Sydney Waterfront District Association. “Studies show that beautification attracts people to spend more time in an area, which in turn has economic benefits. We’re extremely grateful to the province for this opportunity to create a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere that people want to come back to.” Also today, in Yarmouth, Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Zach Churchill announced $13,000 for the town under the Downtown Beautification Project. Work will include the restoration of fountains and landscaping around town signs. “We want visitors to our area, whether they come by land or by sea, to see and enjoy the beauty of our town and all it has to offer,” said Mr. Churchill. “The aesthetics of our town are not only important to our visitors but also to our residents and community.” “The Town of Yarmouth understands the importance beautification plays in economic development and enhancing the quality of life for our citizens,” said Mayor Pam Mood. “We are thrilled to receive this funding which will be used to take us to the next level.” A complete list of approved projects under that program is available at .last_img read more
