Referee suffers sick abuse on Twitter

first_imgReferee Mark Halsey is considering making a complaint to the police after suffering sick abuse on Twitter, following his handling of the Liverpool Manchester United game on Sunday, reports The Daily Mail. The comments related to Halsey’s well publicised battle with cancer, and also, some messages sickeningly related to his wife Michelle’s battle against the same disease.Halsey and his family are thought to be so upset by the tweets, that the referring governing body, Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, will offer to replace Halsey for his Captial One Cup fixture in midweek and give him the opportunity to consult a psychologist.Halsey came under scrutiny for his decision to dismiss Liverpool’s young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, as well as the failure to award a penalty for Jonny Evans’ mistimed challenge on Luis Suarez.Robin Van Persie’s winning penalty was also somewhat controversially awarded, with replays indicating contact between Glen Johnson and Antonio Valencia was minimal.Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and captain Steven Gerrard both publicly criticized Halsey after the match, with Gerrard claiming: “You certainly don’t need big refereeing decisions that are wrong going against you. That’s what happened today and we feel hard done by.”last_img
