first_imgSTREET football fans are in for a treat with the Georgetown leg of the Guinness Greatest of Streets football tournament starting tomorrow at the National Park tarmac.Into its sixth year, the tournament which will run until December 16 has seen 53 entries, only 32 of which will move forward to the main tournament. Once again the support of Colours Boutique will see teams being uniformed from the start.“Even though it is street football, in some instances it has filled the gap left by the absence of conventional football,” Guinness brand manager Lee Baptiste said, during yesterday’s launch, adding, “Banks DIH under the Guinness brand is committed to bringing constructive social activities to the community.”He said that this is the first of seven regional finals, with legs in West Coast Demerara, West and East Coast Berbice, Linden and Bartica. He also noted that Linden will be a host venue for one night of action in the National Finals with another night at the National Park tarmac.“We are proud co-sponsors of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets football tournament, ‘Colours representative Prianna Damon said.The first round of the tournament will be straight knockout while the round of 16 will be round-robin as in this leg winners will cart off $500 000, second-placers $200 000, third-placers $150 000 and fourth-placers $75 000.According to organiser Troy Mendonca, the change in the tournament was at the request of the sponsors.He added, “When you look at teams putting together a management team and dealing with registration and such, I think that it has created some level of character-building among our people.Meanwhile, special provisions have been made to include those persons who are incarcerated, with Mendonca confirming that they will be in the Georgetown Zone.last_img
