first_img Fenceviewer Staff Latest posts by Fenceviewer Staff (see all) Latest Posts Bio ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles saw their baseball season come to an end Tuesday with a 9-7 loss to the Winslow Black Raiders in an Eastern Maine Class B preliminary playoff in Winslow.The Eagles jumped in front early, staking starting pitcher Conor Maguire to a four-run lead in the first inning.Winslow picked two runs in the bottom of the first, and scored another in third, but missed a chance to tie the game when a runner was cut down at the plate.Going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles held a 7-3 lead.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textBut the 14-3 Raiders rallied with six runs, thanks in part to several Ellsworth errors, and held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the seventh to clinch the win.The 11th-seeded Eagles finished with a record of 6-11, while sixth-seeded Winslow moved on to a Class B quarterfinal against number three Oceanside.Also in Class B, the fifth-seeded Mount Desert Island Trojans upped their record to 10-7 on Monday with a nine-inning 2-1 win over the 12th-ranked Presque Isle Wildcats in Bar Harbor.Trojan righthander Steve Hanscom outdueled Presque Isle’s Saul Nunez with each pitcher giving up six hits and striking out eight batters in their complete game efforts.Hanscom won the game for the Trojans with a walkoff run-scoring single to drive in Jack Sasner in the bottom of the ninth.He also singled to drive in Sasner, who had a pair of hits, with MDI’s first run in the fourth inning.The Trojans will next face the number four Camden Hills Windjammers in quarterfinal action.In Class C, the top-seeded Bucksport Golden Bucks (10-2) and the fourth-seeded George Stevens Academy Eagles (12-4) received preliminary round byes.Bucksport was slated to face number nine Penquis in quarterfinal play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.GSA will host the number five Mattanawcook Academy Lynx (12-4) in quarterfinal action Thursday at 4 p.m.Find in-depth coverage of local news in The Ellsworth American.
