Billy Joel Dons Yellow Star Of David At MSG As U.S. Neo-Nazi Activity Grows

first_imgLast night, Billy Joel returned to Madison Square Garden for the first time since the end of Phish’s Baker’s Dozen run. For his Monday performance, Billy Joel made a bold anti-Nazi statement, attaching a yellow Star of David to his lapel and the back of his blazer. The Star of David that Joel donned harkens back to the Holocaust when Nazis forced Jews to identify themselves as a lead-up to the Nazi-led concentration camps that killed six million Jews in Europe.Self-described as “culturally Jewish” and born to Jewish parents, Joel’s act was a strong statement against the rising neo-Nazi and white supremacist movements growing in the United States. In the past, Joel has gone on the record as saying that he doesn’t appreciate political messaging during concerts. In June, the famous 68-year-old musician told Rolling Stone, “I try to stay out of politics. I am a private citizen and I have a right to believe in my own political point of view, but I try not to get up on a soapbox and tell people how to think.”However, Joel’s wordless actions on Monday night were a clear change of heart, perhaps spurred by the “Unite the Right” rally of white supremacists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend that left one counter-protesters dead and many others injured. The yellow Star of David that Joel donned harken back to the Holocaust— the Nazis forced Jews in Germany and Nazi-occupied territories to wear Stars of David or armbands for identification, with those who failed or refused to wear such garments facing severe punishment including death. This act of mass public identification less than one hundred years ago came ahead of the horrific mass-murder of six million Jews in Nazi concentration camps.Statement from Alexa Ray Joel, Billy Joel’s daughter [H/T People]; Cover photo: Myrna Suarez via Katie Lee’s Instagram]last_img read more

Canada’s biggest city, Toronto, to reopen businesses, ending three-month lockdown

first_imgToronto, Canada’s most-populous city and financial capital, will allow businesses to reopen starting on Wednesday, joining other regions in the province of Ontario in ending a three-month pandemic lockdown, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Monday.Malls and restaurants in Toronto, along with Peel Region, which includes some of the city’s densely populated suburbs, will be able to open their patios, according to the government’s plan.Ontario, Canada’s largest province by population, started gradually reopening its economy this month, but Toronto was left off the initial list. Windsor-Essex, in southwestern Ontario near the Michigan border, is the only health region still in Phase 1 of the three-phase reopening, where an outbreak is hitting migrant workers on farms.Ford said the province began sending mobile testing units to the largest farms and food-processing plants on Saturday, but blamed Windsor-Essex’s continued closure on farmers who will not get their workers tested.”Farmers just aren’t cooperating,” Ford said, adding the province cannot force anyone to get tested. “We’ll give it another shot … but then we’re going to have to pull out other tools.”Separately, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pushed back on Monday against pressure from airlines to reopen the nation’s borders. Ford said the government would continue to monitor health trends and consult daily with the province’s medical experts, and asked people to stay vigilant.”It can turn and bite us in the backside in about a heartbeat,” Ford said.Downtown Toronto is home to some of Canada’s biggest banks and insurers, and many of them have agreed to allow their staff to work from home until at least September, Toronto Mayor John Tory said last month.Canadian provinces imposed lockdowns in March to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed 8,430 people in Canada and infected 101,337, according to the latest government data. Toronto has recorded more than 1,000 deaths.center_img Topics :last_img read more

A four day credit analysis and management workshop organized by the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Bankers (ECIB) got on the way at the Public Service Union on Monday.According to resident representative of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Agency Office, Edmund Robinson, the workshop is intended to provide banking and credit officers with the “rudiments” of the “theory and practice” of sound lending along with “techniques” to manage delinquent accounts.Robinson said the workshop comes at a “critical” juncture when persons are still “struggling” with the effects of the financial crisis which began in 2008. The workshop will cover topics like “consumer lending” and participants will also learn how to detect “problem” loans early and identify appropriate solutions. However, Robinson said, while the workshop will address financial institutions and the personal development of its staff, there has been a concerted effort to “enhance the financial literacy” of the public. For the past ten years the monetary council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank has declared the month of October as financial information month and during this year’s observation, emphasis will be placed on “managing credit, record keeping, risk management and protecting ones asset and best business practices”.Workshop participants“Financial education impacts the wellbeing of every individual as well as the economic and social fabric of our communities.” Robinson said.Meantime Chief Executive Officer of the National Cooperative Credit Union Limited Aylmer Irish highlighted the necessity for financial institutions to understand the loan and collections processes.“A significant amount of a financial institution’s revenue comes from the granting of loans and therefore it is absolutely necessary that there is a comprehensive understanding of the underwriting process, and the collections process must be timely and effective, but it is even more important to understand the importance of risk analysis because the objective must be to minimize risk such as credit risk”.The workshop is facilitated by Patrick Thomas and Louis Parris and will come to close on Thursday.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more

This remains to be seen if Rajasthan Royals will start with him in the first eleven. Varun Aaron:When Varun Aaron made his International debut, almost every cricket pundit backed him for his skiddy pace and bounce. However, on a longer run, Aaron was not able to control his line and length and eventually went for runs. The upcoming season will once again be an opportunity for Aaron to showcase his skills at the supreme level. Two Foreign Players to watch out for:Steve Smith: Smith will be returning to some good competitive cricket after almost one year. Though after being handed over the suspension he featured in the Carribean and Bangladesh Premier League, but would definitely be looking IPL as a good preparation before the World Cup. Jofra Archer: Bowling regular yorkers at a skiddy pace are what Jofra Archer is known for. He not only made his name while playing for Hobart Hurricanes but also helped Rajasthan Royals on many occasions last season. This remains to be seen if he can continue this run in this season as well. Past Records:2008: Winner2009: 6th2010: 7th2011: 6th2012: 7th 2013: 3rd2014: 5th 2015: 4th 2018: 4th Rajasthan Royals won the first edition of IPL.Post-2008, Rajasthan Royals has never played an IPL final. Rajasthan Royals will be up against Kings XI Punjab in their opening game.  New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals created the history after becoming the first team to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title. However, post first season, the team hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations as they didn’t play IPL final post that. In the absence of Steve Smith last year, the captaincy baton had been handed over to Ajinkya Rahane who helped the side to reach playoffs. However, going by the dynamics of this team is capable of producing unpredictable. In 2008, they came as under-dogs with Shane Warne and Mohammad Kaif only two renowned names in the side, but what they produced was nothing short of sensational. Smith’s return will give a boost to the franchise and it remains to be seen whether the Australian batsman plays all matches this season considering he would be one of the key batsmen for the Aussies in ICC World Cup 2019.For them, the season this year starts at home as they will be seen locking horns against Kings XI Punjab on March 25 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Royal’s management has picked a few interesting faces with the likes of Oshane Thomas, Liam Livingstone, and others coming into the squad and they will be hoping that change in faces will change their fortunes as well. But will they be able to replicate the heroics of 2008 this year? – We’ll find out in six weeks.  highlightslast_img read more
